Lycopene supplementation aids blood vessel function in heart disease patients

On June 9, 2014, the journal PLOS One reported a benefit for lycopene, an antioxidant that occurs in tomatoes, watermelon and other red fruits, in improving endothelial function in cardiovascular disease patients.

"There's a wealth of research that suggests that the Mediterranean diet — which includes lycopene found in tomatoes and other fruit as a component — is good for our cardiovascular health," stated lead researcher Joseph Cheriyan, who is a consultant clinical pharmacologist and physician at Addenbrooke's Hospital and Associate Lecturer at the University of Cambridge. Below is an excerpt from my memoir, I Can See Clearly Now:

It’s August 1974, and I’m in New York teaching a summer-school session at St. John’s University. I speak with my colleague Dr. Shirley Griggs, who is the director of a federal grant designed to determine if Southern colleges and universities are in compliance with the Civil Rights Act of 1964. She tells me that I could earn some extra money if I were to go to the Mississippi University for Women in Columbus, Mississippi; spend two days sitting in on classes, interviewing students and faculty; and write up a report at the end of the trip.

Having a mind that is open to everything and attached to nothing sounds easy until you think about how much conditioning has taken place in your life, and how many of your current thoughts were influenced by geography, the religious beliefs of your ancestors, the color of your skin, the shape of your eyes, the political orientation of your parents, your size, your gender, the schools that were selected for you, and the vocation of your great-grandparents, to list only some possibilities.

High dose vitamin C reduces Epstein-Barr viral infection

On May 3, 2014, the journal Medical Science Monitor reported a benefit for intravenous vitamin C in patients with high levels of antibodies to the Epstein-Barr virus (EBV), which has been implicated in chronic fatigue syndrome, Burkett's lymphoma, Hodgkin's disease and some autoimmune conditions. "This is, to our knowledge, the first clinical study of ascorbic acid and EBV infection," announce authors Nina A. Mikirova and Ronald Hunninghake of the Riordan Clinic in Wichita.

The duo evaluated data from 35 men and women diagnosed with chronic fatigue or other conditions who had Epstein-Barr virus antibodies measured before and after treatment with 7.5 to 50 grams of in...
